Effectiveness of engineering design simplicity is required in a remote hilly region of North East India. The working season in such areas is less than six months in a year. The velocity of flow is also very large. A steel-intensive scheme for the arch super structure is used for Wahrew Arch Bridge in Meghalaya to take advantage of the lightness whilst erecting & improving seismic performance of the structure. Rules of good order, simplicity and good proportion have been followed in bridge design.

Wahrew Bridge Arch has been used as one of the most competitive options from an aesthetic perspective.

  • HTS Hangers: 19 no. 15.7 mm Φ strands (UTS 1860 MPa)
  • Difference between springing point and deck level: 13.6 m; depth varies from 4 m at the centre to 6 m at the springing location
  • Side stoppers consisting of elastomeric bearings have been proposed between the arch beam and long beam
